The Building Experience

House during construction

Building a house has been one of the hardest things I've ever done. It was physically demanding—waking up on a trailer bed, working a morning labor shift, commuting forty-five minutes to listen to graduate-level physics courses, then heading back to continue building until nightfall. That was my routine.

And there was pressure. Every mistake brought scolding, and with it, a crushing sense of inadequacy— a of being stupid, lazy, and inattentive. But I learned. I learned that when you're exhausted, you still have to focus. When you're frustrated, you need emotional discipline. And when you're building something real, you can't fake it. There's no bullshitting your way in the building of a house.

Ours was the cheapest house in the city—just a frame when we bought it that summer. In six months, before the cold set in, we had to make it livable. That was the deadline. That was the pressure.

But the most important lesson? Sometimes you simply can't walk away. My father bought the house. That was the plan. That was the goal. There was no backing out halfway. And as his main support, neither could I.

The building of a house, is also the building of a character.
